Evidence Assignment

Through this assignment I wanted to capture the different elements of the snow in Boulder. There’s something truly unique to the environment created in Boulder during a night snowstorm. Through this project I decided to use flash to freeze and draw attention to the big flakes falling. I contrasted landscape/ location images with casual portraits as we walked through the snow.

I wanted to really focus on the moment as much as possible and took all pressure away from any shots I wanted to get. I let myself fluidly get in the creative zone and capture as I felt natural. More than anything I wanted to make sure I captured the peaceful and almost therapeutic atmosphere that is created while walking the streets during a snow storm. The calm and tranquility allows you to truly reflect and focus on the events.

For capturing the emotion of the environment it was important for me to contrast between the highlights and shadows in the images. I wanted to create glowing/ soft appearing highlights and rich shadows. I also introduced split toning and color corrections to the images to give a more contrasty color pop. I introduced blue, orange, and magenta into the respective portions of the image to further enhance the environment that I felt. This project truly focused on both the visual side of documenting the walk but also using the way I felt during this time to further edit the images to best represent the way I felt.
